ABOUT US

the south african home of natural herbal medicine

Operating since 1991, we started with only one product, a liquid form of probiotics namely BIOremFERMENT.

Probiotics is the umbrella term for friendly bacteria in your gastro-intestinal tract. For many years we supplied the only probiotic available in South Africa. This gave us the opportunity to learn and teach our customers about the importance of probiotics in the human digestive system.

Probiotics in a liquid form, ensures that the friendly bacteria inside the product is easier absorbed from the mouth to the colon. This liquid form also ensures easier administration for older people, babies and AIDS patients who may have difficulty swallowing tablets. For some time, Albiofa introduced a few more products to the health market.

We have also introduced an anti-oxidant capsule and balm combination called BIOremCYDIN  and Bio Balm.

The latest addition to the range is a ointment which benefits from the combination of probiotics and anti-oxidants. Terapeutico is a must for any skin condition.

Prof. PIETER LODEWIKUS STEYN

When BIOREMFERMENT was first developed In 1988, the mixed culture of lactic acid bacteria was grown in a Lucerne based matrix.  However, this met with some consumer resistance and it was decided to develop a liquid formulation.

Again this met with consumer resistance since the product had an unacceptable bitter taste.  A new formulation was developed with an acceptable taste, which is continued to this day. Lactobacillus acidophilus  was added to the five membered mixed culture, improving the effectiveness of the product. Although some people still object to the taste of the new formulation, it has to be borne in mind that lactic acid, which is produced by the bacteria, has a sour taste which is also present in yogurt and cheese. Although lactic acid is not the main effective constituent of the culture, it contributes to effectiveness of the product. The original product was developed b y Mr. Nico Groenewald and Professor Wilhelm Holzapfel, refinement was  achieved by Professor P.L.Steyn.  Professor Steyn holds a B.Sc. and  an  M.Sc.(Agric.) from the University of Pretoria and   a Ph.D. from the University of California (Davis).
